The Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC), represented by Advocate Paul Kisabo, is participating in the Eastern Africa Regional Convening on Reimagining the Future of Human Rights in Africa, taking place from 27 to 29 October 2026 at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Held under the theme “Securing Gains, Centring Dignity, Shaping Futures,” the convening is organised by the Open Society Foundations (OSF) in partnership with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI), and other partners.
The regional gathering brings together representatives of human rights institutions, civil society organisations, human rights defenders, policymakers and other stakeholders to examine emerging human rights challenges and develop practical priorities for strengthening human rights protection, democratic governance, accountability and civic participation across Eastern Africa.

Advocate Kisabo is contributing as a panelist in two sessions addressing democratic governance, security, transnational repression, civic space and the protection of human rights defenders (HRDs) in Eastern Africa. Through these engagements, THRDC advocates for stronger regional protection mechanisms, accountable institutions and meaningful participation of HRDs in shaping an inclusive, rights-respecting Eastern Africa by 2035.
THRDC maintains that the future of human rights in Africa must be measured not only by legal commitments and institutional frameworks, but also by whether citizens and HRDs can exercise their rights, participate in public affairs and seek justice without fear of intimidation, arbitrary detention, abduction or retaliation.
