Two Young people Residents of Minjingu village in Babati district, Arusha region,  known as Masiali Lais Kipara (19) and Paulo Richard (23) have been arrested after hunting a giraffe in order to sell its meat.

its said that Giraffe meat has been sold between Tanzanian shillings 5000 to 10,000 per kilogram by poachers in Magugu town.

The business is done after the poachers succeeded in killing Giraffes which have big number in the area of ​​the Burunge Wildlife Management Area  which is located between the Tarangire National parks and the Manyara National Parks.


The poaching suspects were arrested in the area of ​​the Burunge wildlife Management Area, (Burunge WMA) by TAWA officers, the officers of the Burunge Wildlife Management Area in collaboration with the officers of the chem chem Association that has invested in the area.


The Manyara Regional Police Commander, George Katabazi has said before Journalists today February 22, 2023 that his officers in collaborations with TAWA officers arrest the suspects and explained that, the giraffe that was killed weighed 54.5 kilogram worth 35.1 million Tanzanian shillings and was found already killed.


He said that the suspects are expected to be brought to court at any time as the investigation of their case has been completed.


The wildlife officer who led the operation to arrest the suspects, Samuel Bayo, while on patrol with his fellow soldiers from Burunge WMA and Chemchem Association, said they found the suspects and the meat, planning to start skinning it to sell.


Bayo said that the incident happened on February 14, at 1700 hours in the evening and they managed to arrest the suspects while they were in the wild and the other two suspects ran away.




The chief anti-poaching officer of the Chemchem association, which has invested in photo tourism and hotels in the area, Erick Nyman has said that the arrest of the suspects is an effort of joint protection.


He said that they have been doing a joint patrol between the soldiers of the Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA), the Babati district wildlife soldiers, the Chemchem soldiers and the Burunge WMA soldiers


Nyman has said that the institution has been spending more than 400 million shillings per year in the fight against poaching in the Burunge WMA area due to the flourishing incidents of poaching in the presence of Giraffes and other animals for food.

In the area of ​​the Burunge Wildlife Management Area, there have been several incidents of poaching of Giraffes and other animals for Stew.

The source of poaching is mentioned by the citizens to build within the transit areas of the Wildlife and thus it has become easier to hunt them in the evenings.

However, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism has already started a testing operation to isolate the wildlife transit areas in the area of ​​Ushoroba for slaughter

Already Over 200 households have been identified as living in the area of ​​ wildlife  and other households have opened farms.
